Bursting Disk Equipment with integrated alarms / special solutions

Bursting disk equipment with integrated alarms can be of diverse design. Either an inductive proximity switch is used that works in combination with other metal flags on the burst membrane, or the conductor path to be destroyed is directly integrated in the bursting disc, so that the amount of components can be further reduced. Special solutions such as extruder bursting discs with integrated breakage monitoring round off the STRIKO offer.

Alarm triggering by means of inductive proximity switches

With the help of inductive proximity switches the response of bursting discs can be economically and permanently monitored. For this purpose, the bursting disc holder is furnished with an inductive proximity switch which is opened by a metal flag attached to the burst membrane of the bursting disc. Once the bursting disc responds conventionally, the burst membrane turns together with the signal flag. Thus the bursting disc’s cross-sectional area will be opened as desired. At the same time, the opening of the bursting disc is detected and the necessary measures may be taken.

By subsequently replacing the bursting disc the original status is restored; the signal flag mounted on the brand new bursting disc in front of the proximity switch safeguards the switch again and will keep it closed until the bursting disc device will respond anew. Choosing this solution means to invest only once in a bursting disc holder along with an inductive proximity switch. No additional costs will incur thereafter – except the usual ones for the replacement of the bursting disc. Consequently, spares and assembly costs will everlastingly decrease. On the contrary, when deciding in favour of the conventional solution with a bursting disc and a connected, separate burst indicator of the series SVT-02, not only the bursting disc but also the additional burst indicator must be replaced.

Special solution – extruder bursting disks

Also extruder bursting diks can be equipped with integrated breakage monitoring. For this purpose the discharge side of the bursting disc body is equipped with shear plugs. Through a precisely fitting hole, the closed circuit current carrying cable is laid which will be cut when the bursting disc opens and associated material comes out. The closed circuit current is thus interrupted and the desired signal activated.

Special solution – bursting disks with integrated alarm

For this variant of the breakage monitoring, the closed circuit current conductor path is directly integrated in the burst disc unit. This design can be implemented for all metal bursting disks. However, since the manufacture is very time consuming, it can only be used in special applications. Simple ask our specialists – we look forward to advise you.

Note about ATEX

All burst indicators / leakage sensors from STRIKO according to the type of protection are rated “i” intrinsic safety – “simple electrical equipment” when connected to an intrinsically safe circuit. The requirements on “simple electrical equipment” are covered in section 5.7 of the standards EN 60079-11:2012 or IEC 60079-11 Ed. 6:2011-06 “Explosive atmospheres – Part 11: Equipment protection by intrinsic safety ‘i’”.

Simple electrical equipment, designed in accordance with the requirements of section 5.7 of the standards EN 60079-11:2012 or IEC 60079-11:2011 and section 16.4 of the standards EN 60079-14: 2014 or IEC 60079-14 Ed. 5: 2013-11 “Explosive atmospheres – Part 14: Electrical installations design, selection and erection” do not require certification; see section 4.4.2 of EN 60079-14: 2014 or IEC 60079-14 Ed. 5: 2013-11.

Such parts are also not governed by directive 94/9/EC since they do not feature any potential source of ignition. The designation of simple equipment can be made by any person/institution, including the manufacturer or installer, and made by freely selectable designation marking or coding preferred for the installation/plant.
